I think it would be great if crafters and smiths were allowed to smelt their own ore into bars. Add a furnace and a smelter (not sure if that's what's required to do this) and have smiths use an average of their craft weapon and craft armor skills to determine their success. Their degree of success determines how many lumps of ore are consumed in creating a bar of metal of the various types. The DC is determined by the type of metal and a +X to -Y comparison on the skill roll determines the number of lumps of ore "consumed". Example: - A DC 20 roll would for instance consume 12 lumps of ore.
- If the player rolled a 25 on his skill roll, it would only consume 11 lumps?
- If the player rolled a 15 on his skill roll, it would instead consume 13 lumps.
What do you think?

I like this idea. Once I get the crafting to begin trickling in I'll look into it.
