//Hello everyone,
Please find below the biography of my first Savage Frontier PC, Nurgar Argarak. All comments welcome!//
Character Name: Nurgar Argarak
Race: Dwarf (Shield)
Gender: Male
Physical Description: A thickly built Dwarf stands in front of you, of indecipherable age. The right side of his face is dominated by a horrible burn mark, giving the flesh a stark, pallid white appearance. He sports dark brown hair and a long beard of the same colour. He wears a black iron earring on his right ear.
Demeanour/Personality: Nurgar is a dedicated explorer and devout disciple of Dumathoin’s teachings at heart. His character is by nature gruff and short-tempered, but he disposes an enormous amount of curiosity which can sometimes makes him overcome his usually reclusive and abrupt behaviour. Years of living and serving within his battered hidden community have resulted in a no-nonsense, duty-axed attitude, which may seem stifling at first. Nurgar has a deep respect for life, having experienced first-hand slavery and constant risk of death and having seen many of his kin permanently endangered. His Oath is a grave matter of extreme importance to him and motivates him greatly. (See below)
Background: Hailing from the tiny dwarfhold of Ashforge (fictional, non-cannon settlement), which is situated in the Greypeak Mountains of the Savage Frontier, Nurgar has seen little of the outside world, especially when it comes to Faerun’s surface. The hostile wilderness, countless tribes of blood-thirsty humanoids infesting the area and a low birth rate made that the community, a remnant of the Frozenfar, chose secrecy bordering on the paranoid in order to assure its survival. Of common lineage, he was one of the rare children to be born before the Thunder Blessing. Nurgar experienced a protected childhood in a stern environment, which sought at all costs to avoid discovery and conflict, delving deep into the Mountain to assure its survival and offering blind devotion to Dumathoin, the Dwarven Gem Under the Mountain. Kin survival was the greatest concern and Nurgar learned from the beginning that duty and Kin life were more important than personal feelings.
Nurgar’s natural talent as cave explorer and Underdark scout soon became apparent to the community elders who speeded up his 20-year long service to the community’s greatest asset: its cleric/abjurer Egnerur the Sly, a Dwarven cleric of Dumathoin/ abjurer of considerable skill, who acted also as the Ashforge’s healer. Under his tutelage, Nurgar soon grew wiser in the ways of the Underdark and his faith to Dumathoin grew stronger too. It was then that tragedy stroke: in of his regular forays in the Underdark to salvage fungi with healing attributes for Egnerur, he was kidnapped by a Duergar slaver party, which was based in the nearby miner caverns’ network. The Duergar immediately set him to crude menial labour, in a very peculiar project of theirs: he was to toil endlessly and with constant danger of his life to the extremely dangerous deep delving of magma veins, deeper and deeper in the Underdark, seeking to find a legendary locale called “Dumathoin’s Basin” deep in the bowels of Faerun. According to myth common to both Dwarves and Duergar, the magma burns so fiercely there that even mithril shall bend to its heat like copper and be melted with ease, allowing for craftsmanship of extreme quality and endurance.
For six long years Nurgar toiled as a slave in the magma mines, dangling precariously in hastily built deep shafts, where falling would mean certain death, battling fatigue, the Duergar’s leash, magma cave-ins and unfathomable darkness. He became knowledgeable in the ways of magma and its flow, by paying a terrible price: during one of the cave-ins, his face was consumed by a jet of liquid magma, surviving only barely. Focusing on his toil, Nurgar over the years developed true love for his task. A kind of silent respect even developed between Nurgar and his harsh taskmasters. Finally freed after a stone giant raid annihilated his captors, Nurgar made his way back to Ashforge and brought back the tale of the Duergar’s search of Dumathoin’s basin with him. Years passed and after the Thunder Blessing, Ashforge entered in a golden age, with new Kin strengthening the frail community. Nurgar finally ending his duties as cave explorer to the now thriving community’s new scout, he has decided to undertake a solemn oath and subsequent journey: he is to find the deepest recesses of Faerun; supposedly deep under the Spine of the World, north of Icewind Dale, where ancient Dwarf holds are held in ruin and occupied by innumerable Orc forces. Nurgar believes that his search for Dumathoin’s Basin must begin there, where he intends to forge a masterfully crafted version of Dumathoin’s Crown and dedicate it to his god. Armed with sheer faith to Dumathoin, fuelled by a solemn oath and keeping his eyes and ears open for clues regarding the legendary Basin’s location, Nurgar set out for his long travel.
