Whilst it's hilarious taking out goblins by popping oily barrels that they are next to, players don't get any XP for doing so.
Is there any way that this can be altered?

Not anyway that I am aware of, no. It all has to do with the effect creator. In this case, while creatures can destroy a barrel, its the barrel's own death that causes the resulting explosion. At best I could change the fireball that erupts from a single barrel to count as if created by the party, but ... any others set off by the explosion wouldn't count. It'd also cause a small lag spike and a short delay would need added to the explosions which would make them alot less reliable. I.e., timing when to set one off would aften depend on lag (seen or unseen) as numbers in the party, numbers of total players online, spawned creatures serverwide running AI scripts, etc... could all affect the timing and effectiveness of them.
