Before....
The old man tells the dark clad man to wait in an upstairs room, slipping him a key. Roughly half an hour later, the man enters the sparsely furnished room, sinking heavily down on the bed in order to take off his boots.

Right now. Ya said ye be the lasses new teacher, aye? Well, it might be Ihave a bit of a personal interest in this. What ya be teachin her?
Once he receives confirmation of the fellows knowledge, he nods his approval and continues speaking.
Ayethatis jes fine, lad. Glad to see dat someoneis watching out for her. Little Rannie deresheis jes as hard headed as her daddyand I doan mean Bentor. Now that he's gone, mayhaps it be time the truth was tole.
He pauses to walk over to a small dark wood chest, ornately carved with a forest scene. Lifting off the lid, he withdraws two items; one an aged looking sheet of parchment. The othera necklace made of dazzling colored beads, each appearing to have been carved from wood and painted in brilliant, vibrant colors. The beads vary in shape from a leaf to a heart and a star, all intricately carved by loving hands. Taking them back to the bed, he holds them, staring down at them a long moment before speaking again.
Ive dreamed of this day. Id wanted to tell her so many times but I had promised to keep it hushed. Lomidashe is a sweet lass but she fell for dat scoundrel son o mine..and she made the mistake of giving herself to him before they were wed proper. Now hes done run off on some adventure and I aint heard word ohim for some years now. Must be that wild elf blood of his.
He looks up, smiling at the other males reaction as he removed a handkerchief hed had wrapped around his head, revealing two pointed ears showing his pure elven blood.
Ayebet you didnt expect that now did ya? My pa was one of dem wild elves. Me maa lovely woman. Best yad ever wanna meet. Shed give ya the shirt off er back and feed ya while she was doing it. She met my pa while she was a youngun living out outside of Chessenta. She was skilled with a song and could play any instrument ya could name. Charm the birds right outta tha trees, she could. But one day instead of a bird, she charmed some wild elf. Hed stay on the edge othe woods, jes listing and watching. This went on for a few weeks before hed come out one day and sat next to her. They didnt talk, she said, but hed join her on a set of reed pipes he carried. I guess they made music together in more den one way, for here I be. She said theyd see each other every day. One day, he placed this here necklace round her neck and held both of her hands. Said she felt it were their wedding day, she did. But den..her pa found out and that was that. She was sent off to live with family..some cousin of her pas. One lil problem, one that came along nine moons later. She raised me, saying my pa had done died in some battlelike a proud warrior. She knew that they were not to be, she saidthough she never wed another. Never even looked at another man as long as she lived. He must have touched her heart somehow in a way that words never could.
He pauses, unfolding the piece of parchment, upon which one can read in an almost childlike script words indicating that Lomida Swift was the author, and that this was her confession of Raniafs paternity, begging the girl to forgive the need for deception.
Bentor..he be a right good lad. Hed been sweet on Lomida for a hounds moon, and even when he found out she were with child, he still married her up and made an honest woman outta her. Ranniecshe looks like her pasame eyes and that same flaming hair. He got it from his ma, blessed woman you saw downElsie. Dat be my wife, ya know. Shes a flirty thing, but she doan mean a word of it. A regular hellcat when mad though. Itfs the hair. All dem redheads are like that.. Lomida, Bentor and I made an agreement dat Elsie and I could help raise our grandchild here at the inn, but we could never tell her who we really was. Her pa,that Malivor, he has a yearning in his heart that nothing seems to stop. Hes asked about her from time to time, until about three years ago. I aint hear a peep from him since den. Rannie was taught to cook by me and Elsie, gods know she were something to smile about even when the customers complained about her swapping the sugar for the salt or by adding different things in to make their foods more pretty, as she said. About had a fight one night when she made dey potatoes bright pink by dropping a root in dere. Silly gal, she always had a wicked temper and could go from calm to boiling back to calm again in a flash. The darnest things would set her off too. Once, it were simply someone told her when she was maybeten or elvendat the eggs would be better tasting if she give em a lil shake before cracking dem. Do not why, but that got her riled up and she threw three of them eggs at that fellow before we could take them from her.
He chuckles at the memory, then grows serious.
You say youfre her teacher? Den teach her who she is,the truth of where she comes from. Donft let her know her pa is a shiftless lay about...let her think that hes off serving somewhere with honor and not some sweet tongued bard with a perchance for Pickpocketting, free flowing spirits, and ladies with no virtue. Her ma tried to tell her, but she wouldnt listen. Now you try and reach her, for she needs to know who she is.
