I mentioned this in my "first and second impression" post.
I've gotten to know the world and the forums a bit more and think that ideas should be thrown out there in regards to the start area.
After reading more on the board, the small start area without a bar or bordello makes sense. Nice, full-blown taverns - even worse than encouraging people to stay in the start area - give high level characters a place to come back to where they can lord-it-over and impress (excuse me, I meant "introduce themselves to") the new arrivals. ;D
On other maps, I've seen that the sloping terrain tiles are used. Maybe that could be used on the town? Exit the boat to climb up a hill/cliff face to find a palisade-surrounded town built atop a series of hills for security.
Or maybe start in/on the boat itself. I've seen impressive looking ship interiors that make anyone go "Niiiiiiiccce." Then a few words with the captain or crew telling you a little about where you'll be going ashore.
Maybe arrive by wagon? Traveling with the Gurs, having an exotic campsite the night before they drop you off at your destination.
Or start off in the multi-faith chapel. The character wakes up, stretches, and looks around. I think there's a few multi-level tiles. The sleeping pallets could be in the loft of the barn. Walking to the edge, the character can look down on the animals, the shrine, and anyone else wandering about.
I find myself leaning towards something to "wow" up the mult-faith chapel. Taking unseen homesteads beyond the gates as a given, there should be something that makes the small start area more than just a local market for the farmers and a few merchants. If there's nothing else of importance (like a boring-to-adventurers but visually appealing ship-building facility), maybe the barn-chapel formed the nucleus of the town. Attracting adventurers starting out, it's the major revenue builder in the area.
Just tossing out ideas haphazardly. As a professional "dipper" into PW's, I just think that player retention would be increased by a bit more "wow" in the initial reveal.
Anyone else got any ideas?
