Been explorin' the world a bit more ... been readin' older forum posts ....
Getting to Llorhk or Loudwater should be tough to discourage newbies. I concur ... keep us in the proper areas. It should be a difficult journey by foot.
I would like to see a road or trail, though, with something to indicate directions. It doesn't need to be wooden road signs ... Baldur's Gate used stone plinths with runes carved on them (if you're Old School).
Personally, I would laugh at the "Deep South" method. Have someone in town say "Loudwater, ehh? North o' the gate, head west till you see the fallen tree. Then travel north a'gin till you see the rock that looks like a sheep givin' a 'come hither' look to a dwarf, then mosey towards ...." Of course someone else would be saying, "Yah can't get there from here."
I did notice that the only real road I followed (expecting it to lead to the next town), dead-ended. That transition led smack-dab into a forest with goblins and hobgoblins with no sign of the road which had been followed.
I wouldn't worry about the road leading newbies into tough areas. Trust me, if I just have a hankering to see another town and start seeing trolls while on walkabout, I'll be running straight back to the area I should be in.

I'll be adding some road signs and other path markers IG soon.
