Familiars and Companions are gained, selected, summoned and unsummoned as per the default rules in NWN here. We do however have some unique rules for them.
1) Death of a Familiar or Animal Companion will result in an XP loss to the owner equal to 100 XP per the owners level. You cannot however lose a level this way.
2) Feeding of Familiars and Companions only works once per 8 game hours (80 minutes RL). You may still heal them through other means as normal.
**Notes: Why an XP loss for them dying you wonder? In PnP which we try to emulate when able the loss of such creatures would leave their owners without an ally for at least a year and/or a journey or quest to find another would be required in many cases. In an online game this is all but impossible to impliment. We've chosen a simply XP loss to reflect how valuable and rare these creatures truly are.
