You know how in most squirrel-spawning areas of Savage Frontier's world, the squirrels see you, run towards a certain tree and vanish? Did you ever notice that the squirrels by the River Greyflow Bridge don't do that?
They just take one look at you and immediately vanish, no matter where they happen to be. They can be on the road, they can be next to a rock, whatever. They vanish all the same, like little furry ninjas hiding in plain sight.
The trees make sense; the squirrels climb the tree to escape you, and since they're squirrels and you're just a big, clumsy, armor-clad adventurer, they can climb that tree a lot better than you can. No contest; squirrel wins.
So the River Greyflow Bridge squirrels may be looking for a designated "Hey, squirrels! Come here and escape!" waypoint on the map, but that waypoint may have been left out of this area, so the squirrel's scripting simply gives up on looking for it and makes the squirrel vanish. Either that or the entire area is made out to be a "Come here, Squirrelly!" waypoint, so the squirrel's escape script says, "RUN FOR THAT ESCAPE POI...oh, I'm already here!" and the squirrel vanishes.
Anyway, squirrels are too stupid to be ninjas and our hunters need a respectable chance to hunt them down and kill them. Thank you. (No, Barleigh isn't one of those squirrel hunters. She's too busy smiting evil, protecting the innocent and harvesting grains and veggies to bother with that rubbish. )

Perhaps they are ground squirrels. They could be running into their burrows. (more related to Viet Cong than Ninjas, but still dangerous) Time to get the hose.

The script for timid creatures orders them to flee towards a specific object. Squirrels seek a tree, deer seek thickets and rabbits seek a hole. They then move to "it" and disappear. If a matching object does not exist on the map however, they'll simply just "poof".

Some characters (and their players) just love to chase squirrels! Rodents run for hole Here comes man, hungry and lean Time for nuts later You. Haiku thread. Now. Also, squirrels are weird and raccoons are little thieves.

I'm updating scripted random encounters to drop a "tree" prior to squirrels spawning in. I'll also be adding a special script to set encounters for squirrels to provide them a tree too. Area cleaners eat their trees in some areas. Consider this a WIP as I go through the module.
