So by my count, Ashanti — huntress that she is — has killed at least eight squirrels, six rabbits, five black bears, five grey wolves, three deer (two bucks and a doe; the fawns and any doe with a fawn are off-limits), three badgers, a worg, a dire wolf and a cougar. And yet she has yet to find — let alone harvest (or loot) — a single Meat or Skin from her kills. The items are out there, of course, but the only two Rabbit Meats she found were looted from a couple of goblins she had killed (not rabbits), and she found both Squirrel Meat and Squirrel Skin on the carcass of a red squirrel which had been chased down and killed by a dire spider. Ashanti had to kill the dire spider before she could get to the squirrel...troublesome, but doable. But you can't always count on dire spiders to do your hunting for you, and so far I'm batting zero in the game-hunting game...hunt...something. So is there some special tool or setting which I must first click, use, enable or activate before meat, skins, antlers and other critter parts start appearing in the critter corpses after my more successful hunts, or have I just been rolling some really, really bad dice?

The odds of finding meat or hides (or other parts) is based on your points in "Spot". The higher they are, the more often you'll be rewarded. Spot was used as its often of little value and for hunters, "spotting" the best prey (largest, meatiest, largest antlers) is crucial to success.

Okay, that explains things. I tend to prefer investing in Listen over Spot out of the stealth-detecting skills (since Spot opposes Hide, stationary creatures use Hide if I'm not mistaken, Listen opposed Move Silently and stealthy critters are usually creeping your way...). It's nice to know that Spot gets a little more love on this server. Thank you.

So apparently, having 5 points in Spot spawns meat on animal carcasses, and having 10 points in Spot spawns skins and hides on animal carcasses. I assume that having 15 or 20 points in Spot spawns other bits, like antlers, horns, bones, hooves and such. Is that about right?
*adds a Wolverine, a Griffon, an Owlbear, six Bison, three Green Drakes, three Demon Drakes, two Giant Wolf Spiders and an Ettin to "The List of Big Game Critters That Ashanti Has Killed While Out Hunting"* (Admittedly, the kills on the griffon and the ettin were a bit cheaty because Ashanti had to pop a Ginseng Root after those critters took the upper hand. But it beats dying, right? And I was so lucky that the Ginseng Root didn't come up with True Seeing again....) The wolverine gave a skin (which I'm saving so that Ashanti can craft some custom-made Hide Armor +3 with her name on it as soon as she reaches Level 10 or 15 or whatever it is...), the bisons each gave a meat and a skin, and everything else gave precisely nada. Except for the ettin, maybe. I think he/they/whatever had some Gold. Maybe next time, the ettin will give Ashanti a real trophy, right?
But alas, Ashanti's hunting trip through the Severed Woods came to an abrupt end.
Don't worry, Dead Elf Whom Ashanti Found in the Hobgoblin Cave. She'll find a way to carry you to Elvenport one day.

If you want the best skins (which sell for more), invest heavily in Spot.
On another note, Search, Lore, Crafting skills, and others also have other uses besides the obvious if you invest in them.

So you're saying that the quality of the skins is affected by Spot as well? As an example, right now Ashanti can kill a dire wolf, take its skin and sell it to the tanner for 40 Gold. Will the dire wolf skins she harvests earn more Gold apiece (like, say, 50 Gold or more) as her Spot skill increases? wow I really really wanna get on and play now lol So what's stopping you?

And we're not just talking 10 og 15 pts in Spot. A collected pelt will always sell for the same at the Tanner's no matter your skill level. Appraise also does not adjust your earnings when selling at those item-specific merchants.

I don't want a displacer beast skin! How would you pick it up? "Oops...missed. Oops...missed again! It's like this pelt is somewhere five feet away from where I'm trying to grab it!"

Would make you think you could make some pretty nifty armor from it...

Yes, some leather or hide armor with a Concealment bonus would be nice, wouldn't it?
