Just an update. After having tweaked and then rewritten our XP System it looks like we've settled on one with decent results. Here's some details on the core of our system as it stands now.
Whether in a group or alone, each players XP for killing a creature is based on their own level and the CR (difficulty rating) of the createre killed. The base XP reward here right now is 10xp for a kill whose CR equals your PCs level. Awards over 10xp means you're exceeding your challenges which is a good thing, if you survive.
Bonuses added to base xp here:
- Bonus for being in a group
- Bonus for each party member over 2 in your group
- Bonus for defeating a foe 1 - 5 CR higher than your level
Penalties applied to base xp here:
- Penalty for each summons/companion/familiar in your group
- Penalty for defeating a foe whose CR exceeds your level by more than 5
- Penalty for defeating foes whose CR is beneath your level
- Bioware's Multiclassing Penalties will also apply if/when your character warrants such due to your build.
"Boss" type creatures as a rule bypass our XP System and reward all in the party a flat xp reward and/or a gold reward when defeated.
**Also, due to most areas being "scaled", it's not unusual to kill several creatures in a group of them and recieve xp that differs slightly for some of them. This is because the actual encounters will try to scale up/down to spawn an appropriate challenge based on your party's levels. Most encounters here are "scaled" to allow a good challenge for a wider range of levels is all.
